The marketing plan for Blue Print 3 seems to be in full swing as Hip Hop mogul Jay-Z stirs the industry up with his latest tactics.
Jay recently called in to Chicago's WCGI radio and shed some light on the Def Jam departure, Death Of Auto-tune, his top 5 all time, Dj Webstar, and more.
On Leaving Def Jam:
"I just thought that at this point in my career, I shouldn't have a record deal--it's not consistent with the type of business that I've been doing. We did great business at Def Jam so I went to L.A. Reid and he gave me the green light to speak to Doug. Me and Doug had negotiations, I flipped the coin and lost--and paid a little more than what I should."
Death Of Auto-tune:
"When a trend becomes a gimmick, it's time to move on. I saw a Wendy's commercial and they're using Auto-tune, they're joking on it. It's like ok, enough of that." Brooklyn MC Mos Def has taken the time to clarify a lyrical challenge he issued to some of Hip Hop's biggest names earlier this year.
The rapper turned actor had some choice words as he stood with a small entourage somewhere in Detroit.
"You really think that Jay and Weezy can beat me," Mos asked in a video.
"It will never happen. None of them. Whoever. Listen, niggas I like, I love Freeway, but come get the money if you think you can.
Beans, I love him....[Andre 3000] ,whatever, I'm taking the money back to Brooklyn.
I'm taking the money back to Brooklyn. Jay is the best out. I'm taking the ring and I'm taking the belt right back."
In a recent interview, Mos clarified his statements saying--the challenge didn't specifically have to do with him.
"My response was to me seeing an article where [Jay-Z] was referred to, with trade marks following it, as the 'Greatest Rapper Alive,'" Mos explained in an interview with Angie Martinez.
"Now that don't have nothin' to do with me, but if you saying that, that's a trade claim...If you saying that, you saying you better than Slick Rick, whose still very alive and well? You saying you better than Rakim? You saying you better than Black Thought?" He continued.
"People making that claim have never been in a position to defend that in an open forum. I'm not talking about making a diss record or trying to go in on somebody's girl...When people start coming out and making claims they're gonna have to defend, like, who have you had to defend them against? It's certainly been with people not on your level."
Mos' new album The Ecstatic was released yesterday (June 9).
